Essential Oils and Lyme Disease

Uses for Myrrh and Cinnamon Bark Essential Oils There are many people who suffer from Lyme Disease, often referred to as Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and essential oils can help.  Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that is caused by the bite of an infected tick.  This infection comes from the microorganism Borrelia burgdorferi.  Symptoms of the inflammatory response to this microorganism include flu-like symptoms, joint pain, neurological problems and rash.  Traditional medicine treats Lyme disease with antibiotics – which often takes care of it, especially if it is caught in the early stages.

Most people are aware of the overexposure we get to antibiotics today, as they are given to chickens and cows, which we then eat and get “dosed” with antibiotics unwittingly.  Or, we are given antibiotics for every little illness that we encounter, often when antibiotics won’t even help our situation – such as when we have a virus.  Thus, we have become antibiotic-resistant, and more powerful antibiotics are required to get results, or we have to take multiple rounds of several antibiotics…..  Then, because these antibiotics are non-discriminant (meaning they kill everything, even the good bacteria that we need for a healthy immune system), we are left with a compromised immune system, and our body’s ability to fight off infection and other microorganisms is no longer able to keep us optimally healthy.

So, what are we supposed to do?  We cannot ignore Lyme disease, but we are hesitant to take round after round of antibiotics, knowing that it is making us more antibiotic resistant.  Enter Young Living Therapeutic Grade essential oils!  Long before there were pharmaceutical companies, nature has provided us with natural antibiotics through plants like oregano, thyme, clove, melissa, myrrh, and others.

Before we talk about possible applications of essential oils to address Lyme disease after exposure, let’s talk about prevention.  Young Living has an essential oil blend called Purification that repels fleas and ticks.  Here are a few uses for this amazing oil blend:

  • Dilute several drops of Purification essential oil blend in a spray bottle and spray to repel insects.
  • Apply one drop of Purification essential oil blend topically to soothe existing bug bites or scratches.
  • Add Purification essential oil blend to your washing machine to freshen laundry.
  • Add a couple drops of Purification essential oil blend to shoes to help neutralize odors.
  • Add a few drops of Purification essential oil blend to a cotton ball to help eliminate stale air in the office or your child’s room.
  • Diffuse Purification essential oil blend to dispel unpleasant odors and clear the air of impurities.
  • Diffuse Purification essential oil blend to eliminate odors after the dog returns from playing outdoors in the rain.

So, put Purification essential oil on your body, as well as spritzing it on your clothing to repel those pesky ticks for prevention.  For your animals, you can put a drop at the base of their neck, between the shoulder blades, to repel ticks and fleas.

And here’s a recipe for Natural Flea & Tick Prevention With Essential Oils
Mix in stainless steel bowl:
1/2 tsp alcohol
1 drop Young Living Cedarwood oil
3 drops Young Living Purification oil
2 drops Young Living Lavender oil
2 drop Young Living Citronella
1 drop Young Living Thyme oil
3 drops Young Living orange oil

Soak pet’s collar in mixture until all is absorbed. Allow to dry completely. This is good for 30 days.

You can also use it as a spray on humans or soak some fabric bands and put around wrists and ankles.

Now, let’s talk about what you might choose to do if you know you already have Lyme disease.  According to the Essential Oils Desk Reference, one could use Young Living oils that are known to be highly anti-microbial, like thyme, clove, melissa, oregano, myrrh, eucalyptus blue and ocotea, as well as oil blends made by Young Living, such as Thieves, Melrose and Exodus II.  These oils could be diffused for 1/2 hour every 4-6 hours, or as desired, in a cold-air diffuser, such as the Aroma Ace diffuser.

The Essential Oils Desk Reference also suggests that you might choose to ingest oils like Thieves, thyme, clove, melissa, oregano, or ocotea by putting 2-3 drops of oil in a capsule filled with olive oil, 3 times per day.  Another option, which would be my choice, is to take the Inner Defense™ capsules made by Young Living up to 5 times per day.

Young Living’s Inner Defense™ reinforces systemic defenses, creates unfriendly terrain for yeast/fungus, promotes healthy respiratory function, and contains potent essential oils like oregano, thyme, and Thieves® which are rich in thymol, carvacrol, and eugenol for immune support. The liquid softgels dissolve quickly for maximum results.

And if you have taken antibiotics, there’s a good chance that your immune system is already compromised by having all the “good” bacteria removed – so be sure to take Young Living’s Life 5™ Priobiotics regularly to help re-establish the healthy flora in your gut that is necessary for good immune function. :-)   A high-potency probiotic, Life 5™ represents the culmination of years of extensive research. Life 5™ builds and restores core intestinal health by providing five clinically proven probiotic strains including two advanced super strains to enhance intestinal health, sustain energy and improve immunity. Life 5™ contains 8 billion active cultures and improves colonization up to 10 times.    Life 5 pdf

It is not often that I include other recommendations in my blog, as it is meant to be specifically about essential oils and oil-enhanced products; but today I am going to share another “plan of attack” for Lyme disease, because it is often very difficult to get relief from Lyme disease.  If I were suffering with Lyme disease, I would most certainly attack it with essential oils from Young Living, and I would also use the Biomat to come at it from another approach.  You can read all about their recommendations for its use with Lyme disease here.

In summary, this summer be sure to use Young Living Therapeutic Grade essential oils to keep the ticks and other bugs away; and if you are exposed to any kind of tick bite, take precautionary measures to kill any kind of microorganism that might be invading your body from a tick bite with essential oils – but remember, if you are using oils and expecting a therapeutic result, be sure you are using Young Living Therapeutic Grade.

Experienced the big bulls eye rash[es], fever, cold sympoms, fatigue… 2 Raindrops later and I was lyme-free. :) I love Young Living!

  • Teri S says:

Lyme and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF), while both being tickborne bacterium, are two different bacteria. Lyme, as you indicated, comes from the bacterium Borellia Burgdorferi, while the RMSF is caused by the bacterium Rickettsia rickettsi. Both are bacterial infections. I had both of the tickborne diseases along with 6 other tickborne diseases at one time. While it was confusing to traditional medicine doctors why the 9 months of very heavy antibiotic treatment did nothing to rid me of any of the bacteria (I also had protozoan and parasitic infections from the nasty tick), when I began to use an abundant amount of EOs, they were even more confused and suggested that I was still using the pharmaceutical antibiotics (which I was not). The bacteria, parasites, and protozoa had NO chance of surviving against what God had fashioned for our use against them! Sure, there may be applications where strong antibiotics are needed, but for the most part, the God-made essential oils are far more effective without the harmful side effects of pharmaceuticals!

Which essential oils did you use to treat the lyme, etc? And in which manner did you use them? I have lyme and symptoms of others as well, but I was bit by a spider. Red rash, not a bulls eye, but stiff neck, meningitis, headache, pain in two of my joints and forgetfulness. Plus the muscle twitching and feeling of movement along the side of my head and nerve pain in my tmj area. The bloodwork confirmed lyme. Tried antibiotics, doing some rife, but would like to try essential oils. Thanks for any information on your experience.

  • Natalie Lockhart says:

Thanks for this info Jackie. Lyme is a bacterial infection not a viral infection…

    • Jackie says:

Thanks, Natalie, for pointing out that error – actually, I knew that, but somehow typed viral instead of bacterial. I appreciate you keeping me on my toes!

  • Debbie says:

yes…please help. I too…have Lyme and co infections. under a lot of care with good lyme docs and health /supps. protocol. its insane…and been years of hard hard work…can you help give directions to what and how often etc. I know and understand we are all different but …us Lyme Or …lymies….all know what it feels like and all have many of the same symptoms at different times. I think most of us do deal with some sort of nagging inflammation in our body, joints and tissues, neck stiffness , brain fog / brain anything…as lyme is brain prob! We get weirdly tired, get sore throats, swollen glands, edema, have mood issues esp when you don’t feel well. Yet we are happy people generally… oh, dear! Catch colds easily or feel like you have the flu often. MOST of us cannot work. I used to teach school and had little kids, sweet hubby…and now? 20 years later….those little kids are married hubby keeps me going… thank the LORD… I had a friend introduce me to oils…how sweet. I am using some of her oils but… we are lost as what to do about feeling LIFE again. Please e mail me at Thank you.

Debbie, I just emailed you the protocol that has been used successfully by others to overcome Lyme’s – Call me when you receive it if you want to talk further.

  • Justin says:

hey jackie can you please email me the lyme essential oil protocol as well?

  • jabbok3kids says:

    Hi Jackie,
I’m curious about the protocol also and will be sending you an email shortly. My daughter (she’s 9) was diagnosed with Lyme last year. She has been sick off and on since early March this year. She’s down right now with a sore throat, fever and body aches. It makes me sad to see her sick so much.

  • Vicki says:

I’d love the protocol for my dog. He has a big red circle around the area. thanks!

    • Jackie says:

Vicki, I would put oils right away on the area where you see the big red spot. Purification is always my first choice. Oregano would also be good, but it is a “hot” oil, so be sure to dilute it a bit with a good vegetable oil. I am sending you the protocol that has been used successfully by others in battling Lyme Disease. Please call me if you have questions – my number will be in the email. If you don’t have an account with Young Living, you can get one at – choose either the retail or wholesale option.

  • Kris says:

Could you please e-mail me the protocol.

  • brittany says:

I just developed a bulls eye rash, but never saw a tick on me. I don’t want to go to the doctor and be put on antibiotics. Will I be able to prevent contracting the lymes after being bitten? I’ve been applying purification, but the rash hasn’t changed. Does it take a while? Can you email me the protocol too? Can I use this protocol on my dog too? After you have already contracted Lyme’s, is it reversible?

    • Jackie says:

I assume, since you said you’ve been using Purification, that you already have a Young Living account. If not, contact me and I will assist you. In addition to using the Purification, I would start taking 5 Inner Defense capsules per day, if it were me. The oils in this supplement work better than antibiotics at killing the microbes that cause the disease and problems. I would continue with the Purification, and I might even add oregano, as well. Copaiba is a magnificent oil for fighting inflammation, so I would top them all off with Copaiba. I am emailing you the protocol, as well. Good luck, and Great Health to you! Jackie

It’s spelled lyme, not lyme’s. There is no s on the end….
